Flooding in Madison and at Lake Madison

As you have read, the flood of Madison in 1993 has caused many of problems, including millions of dollars of damages after the flood, and the controversy over the dams. As you will watch in the video, flooding can devastate a town like Madison. Pay attention to familiar houses and businesses, and see how high the water level is. What we will focus on is not the flooding of the town of Madison, but the effects of flooding and water levels at Lake Madison.

Tomorrow we will work with a computer program called "Stella" which will graph changes in the lake levels depending upon what types of information that we input.

There are many possible solutions to the problem of flooding, but it is up to you to decide which is the best.  After watching the video and working with the Stella modeling, circle the solution of your choice or write in your own solution in the blank. Then write at least 75 words explaining you feelings and beliefs of why you chose the specific solution.

  1. Put a detention dam at the inlet to Lake Madison, so when there is a lot of precipitation or runoff, then it will hold back some of the pressure.
  2. Open a wider channel to let water out of the lake faster.
  3. Move the houses and cabins up further away from the water so they won’t have any problems.
  4. Let the detention dam North of Madison do it’s job, and then it shouldn’t flood Lake Madison as much because not much water is coming in from the city of Madison.
  5. Do nothing.
